COLBY'S CREW STORY
We saw Big John's story of rescue and well-deserved retirement at Colby's Crew and fell in love!
Big John, the gentle giant horse who holds the unofficial title of the largest living horse in the world, was rescued from slaughter by Colby's Crew, a nonprofit organization based in Warrenton, Virginia. Despite his towering twenty-hand (6'8'') stature, it was Big John's endearing personality that attracted many followers.
Known as the "King of Horsetok," Big John captured the hearts of many through his goofy and gentle nature. However, life wasn't always easy for Big John, who was underweight, abused, and lame when he was first rescued by Ally and her wife, Olivia, at an auction in April 2021.
After years of working as a draft horse, Big John deserved a dignified retirement, and Ally and Olivia were determined to give it to him. Today, Big John is thriving, and his story has touched the hearts of many, spreading awareness about the importance of animal welfare. Our Mission Statement:
"We strive to save horses from being slaughtered, one life at a time!"
Colby's Crew Rescue, established in 2021, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is solely focused on the good and well-being of the horse. In August of 2020, our horse Colby was rescued from heading to slaughter. His journey that started out as abuse, neglect, fear of humans and danger has changed into a journey full of compassion, trust, and positivity. Colby has formed an inseparable bond with his trainer, Ally. This bond has inspired the creation of this rescue to help other horses, like Colby, that are in need.
Every year in the United States, over 80,000 horses are shipped out to Mexico or Canada to slaughter houses. These horses endure a one-way trailer rider to an unimaginable fate. The last stop before a slaughter house is a direct-ship kill pen. Colby's Crew rescues horses from kill pens, auctions and bad situations. These horses are usually in terrible condition: sick, neglected and tossed away.
We strive to provide rehabilitation, veterinary care, training, and eventually adoption to forever homes!
